Something New- Textual-ish

Originally I was planning on analyzing a quote on revolution for the textual component of my portfolio, but then I found this Mao Zedong quote:

“A revolution is not a dinner party, or writing an essay, or painting a picture or doing embroidery.”

Embroidery is one of my hobbies, so I thought it would be ironic to embroider this quote for the non-textual element of my portfolio. I also found this quote interesting in terms of embroidery as a hobby itself. Embroidery is often thought of as the epitome of a domestic, feminine pastime, but recently edgy patterns with feminist and socially conscious themes have become popular, especially on crafting sites like Etsy. I think that the juxtaposition of this stereotypically traditional hobby with radical ideas and improper language is especially powerful and fascinating. I also love how modern women have found a way to reclaim an activity that propagated traditional gender roles, and believe that in a way, this twist on embroidery could be viewed as revolutionary.

I am still working on this project because designing the pattern and plotting it out on the fabric took much longer than expected, but I should have it done by the end of break! Stay tuned!

COVID-19 Update:

Unfortunately, somehow this project was misplaced when moving out of my dorm room, so I was unable to complete it. However, the overarching meaning of the work remains the same and I look forward to continuing to embroider over quarantine while supporting my favorite feminist Etsy cross-stitch pattern shops!
